Ever since my interest in technology began, I have always wanted to work in both software and hardware. Through Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW), I joined a group research team under UCI Professor Wayne Hayes that incorporated both fields in their project. My team and I are developing a set of connected waste bins that will measure the amount of CO2 saved and display it on interactive screens above the bins. In creating this system, we hope to encourage students to recycle their waste properly and help spread awareness about various ways to help the environment. To complete this task, we are connecting the bins through various sensors and a Raspberry Pi unit, which will be written in Python. Our sensors will activate when something is thrown in and the amount of CO2 saved, along with other statistics, will be shown on the screen. We are sponsored by UCI Hospitality and Dining, and have received a grant by Coca-Cola to implement this project.
